Florida-Specific Youth Survey

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit.

The Florida-Specific Youth Survey is a state-wide survey that was a collaborative effort between the Florida Department of Education and the School Mental Health Collaborative at the University of South Florida. The survey is aligned to the standards and required instruction for Health Education, pursuant to section 1003.42(2)(n), Florida Statutes, which includes Resiliency Education, Civic and Character Education, and Life Skills Education. The Florida-Specific Youth Survey is designed to align services and supports with instruction to better meet the needs of Florida’s students. The Florida-Specific Youth Survey has two sections: the Resilience Section and the Health Behavior Section.

Resilience Section

The Resilience Section was designed to measure the resilience of Florida students. The Resilience Section was separated into 13 characteristics: Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Empathy, Gratitude, Grit, Honesty, Mentorship, Perseverance, Problem Solving, Responsibility, Responsible Decision Making, Self-Awareness, and Self-Management. The Resilience Section yields a General Resilience Score and a Resiliency Characteristic Score for each of the 13 characteristics. The General Resilience Score is the average rating based on a five-point Likert Scale (1 = Never to 5 = Almost Always) of all the items across all characteristics. The Resiliency Characteristic Score is the average rating based on the five-point Likert Scale (1 = Never to 5 = Almost Always) of all items within each characteristic. There are three ranges of resilience: High (Score = 3.50-5.00), Medium (Score = 2.50-3.49), and Low (Score = 1.00-2.49).The General Resilience Score encompasses the items from all characteristics except mentorship and citizenship. These two characteristics are not individual characteristics; they are dependent on interaction with another individual and/or the community.

Health Behavior Section

The Health Behavior Section was designed to measure student health behaviors and knowledge of Florida students. The Health Behavior Section was separated into 10 domains: Injury Prevention and Safety, Internet Safety, Nutrition, Personal Health, Prevention and Control of Disease, Substance Use and Abuse, Child Trafficking Prevention Education, Teen Dating Violence and Abuse, Sexual Abstinence, and Resiliency Education.
